about

The third release from Winnipeg indie rock quartet futurekids finds the band playing four love songs written by other people. Each song on the Like Like EP was chosen by a different band member, and they would like to tell you why:

Paul Webster, guitar/vocals, on covering “My Timing Is Off” by Eels:

“I picked ‘My Timing Is Off’ because Hombre Lobo was a big record for me. It has a beautiful melody and was something I resonated with immediately. I had enough years behind me to understand what he was talking about too. I'd lived it.”

Kaeleigh Ayre, Moog/glockenspiel/vocals, on covering “Gigantic” by Pixies:

“I picked ‘Gigantic’ because Nick introduced me to Pixies and it was the start of our friendship, which maybe has kind of been like Frank and Kim's? And I relate to her as the solo girl with a bunch of guys in a band, who just answered a want ad and picked up an instrument she'd never played before.”

Nicholas Friesen, bass, on covering “Ahead By A Century” by The Tragically Hip:

“As the Hip were my favourite band in high school, I first tried singing ‘Ahead by a Century’ for a talent show in 2001, but my band was out performed by an early version of KEN mode. Having only recently recovered from the embarrassment, I felt like I could give the song a try again, this time letting Paul and Kaeleigh sing it with much better results. The original is iconic and beautiful, and we tried to honour its spirit while making it sound like us.”

Ian Peters, drums, on covering “Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Joy Division:

“I’ve always loved the ‘80s in all its synth glory, and after seeing Gavin Rossdale as a goth singer in the opening sequence of Criminal Minds covering Joy Division, I developed a new love for this song.”

Bridging the gap between the band’s 2015 LP This is Everything and a forthcoming LP due out in September of 2017, the Like Like EP is another upbeat offering from futurekids, known for such songs as Diamond Deposits’ Top Track of 2015, “White Girl in a Wu-Tang Shirt”.
